Most famous German lighthouses are the Offshore-structure Roter Sand from 1885 in the mouth of the Weser river and the classic shaped lighthouse Westerheversand from 1907, both painted Red and White.

In German lighthouses are referred to as Leuchttürme (»light towers«), lightships are referred to as Feuerschiffe (»Fire ships«). A front light is called a Unterfeuer, whereas a rear light is referred to as a Oberfeuer.
